PANJIM: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has opposed the manner in which the Traffic Sentinel Scheme is operating while demanding that government replace it with a more systematic plan to bring in discipline on roads.

NCP Goa General Secretary Sanjay Barde has expressed his dissatisfaction to clicking photographs and recording videos of the traffic violators clandestinely.

“All the 40 Legislators should appoint two persons in each of their constituencies to report violations on the roads and they should be given uniforms unlike the sentinels who hide and record/click the violators/violations. Why they should hide,” he questioned during a press briefing on Tuesday.

Asked whether the party demands scrapping of the scheme, he replied in the affirmative and justified it saying the scheme was not doing justice to curb traffic violations.

“Majority violators are two-wheelers and not car drivers. Why are fancy cars, involved in traffic violations not caught by the traffic sentinels? Why the government is harassing two-wheeler riders only? If the government wants to earn income, they should enforce the scheme in proper manner,” he added.

The party has backed Calangute MLA Michael Lobo’s demand to withdraw the scheme, who on Monday told reporters that the scheme was used to harass the tourists.
