Sudin silent; Azgaonkar, Pauskar leave the decision up to Dhavalikar brothers; BJP chief says Deepak assured Gadkari he would not contest; Deepak says no question of withdrawal

PANJIM: The confusion between alliance partners BJP and MGP on contesting the Shiroda by-election continues.

Even as BJP senior leaders Amit Shah and Nitin Gadkari managed to arm-twist the MGP, the oldest regional political outfit is not coming out open on its decision.

On Monday, BJP leaders eked out a written assurance from MGP leader Ramkrishna ‘Sudin’ Dhavalikar that his party would not field candidates for upcoming by-elections and not to even think about the Lok Sabha polls. But his younger brother and party president Deepak said there was no question of withdrawing from Shiroda by-poll.

It is interesting to note that Sudin has now maintained silence on the issue. Even other two party MLAs namely Manohar Azgaonkar and Deepak Pauskar have left the ball in Dhavlikar brothers’ court.

Speaking to Herald, BJP President Vinay Tendulkar said that Deepak has assured Nitin Gadkari that he would not contest the by-poll. “We were witness to that conversation. It was clear condition put forth,” he said.

When asked about the same, Sudin smiled and said, “Will talk later”.

Even minister Azgaonkar said, “Please talk to Sudin and Deepak…they are our leaders and we will follow them…don’t ask me anything”.

Pauskar, however said, if Deepak wants to contest then he would campaign for him and MGP would win the Shiroda seat.

Deepak on Tuesday had said that there was no question of withdrawal and he would resume his campaign after three days. However, he said that his party would not contest in other three by-elections -- Mandrem, Mapusa and Panjim and also Lok Sabha polls.
