Two tonnes of dadi, one tonne of tilapia, 150 kgs of catfish were harvested

MARGAO: Curtorim lake situated next to the church and called Angadi lake gave a bountiful catch of fresh water fish today when it was harvested. The person who bagged the right to harvest the lake was extremely happy with the catch of local much in demand fish.

While nearly two tonnes of local small fish called dadi was harvested, they also netted nearly one tonne of tilapia another prized delicacy and the amount of valloi caught was not quantified.

However, what was amazing was the nearly 150 kgs of catfish called tigur that were harvested and they were quite big in size with the smallest being around 7 kgs in weight.

In all around 67 chonak, another prized local fresh water fish, were netted.

The lake is maintained by the Sirjiad Angadi Lake Tenants Association who had auctioned the right to harvest the lake this year for Rs 41,000.

The harvesting began last night and by 6 am the fish was ready for sale and most of it was sold out by 10 am with only dadi and a few tigurs remaining.

Members of the tenants association disclosed that this year they deliberately did not introduce the Rahu Katla fish variety that is being promoted by the government as they wanted to test the catch of fish without the exotic table fish being introduced.

They expressed great happiness with the catch of the local fish which would have been lesser as Rahu Katla is suspected of being carnivorous that kills the local fish breed.

It may be recalled that Curtorim’s Mai Tollem was harvested on March 19 and the catch there was about 800 kgs of Rahu Katla. However, they had managed to net around 500 kgs of Sea Bass which is commonly called chonak.
