PANJIM: The High Court of Bombay at Goa on Tuesday directed the government that it should allow the slaughter of bulls by the Muslim community for Bakri Eid -- which falls next week -- only at the Goa Meat Complex (GMC).

The court, however, warned that it would hold government and slaughter house operators responsible if any illegal slaughtering was detected.

Govt had on September 19, argued before the Court that as GMC is currently under renovation, the government should be allowed to make special arrangements to permit the slaughter of cows for Bakri Eid. It had also informed the Court that slaughter was not permitted. (Demand for ban on cow slaughter).

State Advocate General A N S Nadkarni said the government was considering whether any other place could be designated and specified for animal slaughter, provided the authorities permitted this.

He said currently only GMC is designated for slaughter of animals and the government will require time to prepare a list of other designated slaughter houses.

The Court said though its earlier order allowed slaughtering of bulls above 12 years for Eid, it said that Qurbani for Bakri Eid would be held only at the Meat Complex and has directed the Association of All Goa Muslim Jamaats to ensure no illegal slaughtering takes place.

Hanumant Parab of the Govansha Raksha Abhiyan (Goa) had filed an intervention application against the cattle slaughter before the Court.
