MARGAO: Emphasising that allowing sailors to spend more time with their families serves as a progressive precedent in the maritime industry, the Goan Seamen Association of India (GSAI) has urged the Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) to consider allowing shore leave for seafarers and to facilitate family visits when their ships are docked at the port. According to GSAI President Frank Viegas, the association has also asked the MPA to review and revise existing

policies and procedures to allow seafarers to take shore leave whenever it is feasible and safe.

In a letter to the MPA, Viegas said that granting these privileges would enhance seafarers’ overall happiness, job satisfaction, and, consequently, the efficiency and productivity of the port. Seafarers often spend extended periods away from their families, and being able to spend quality time with their loved ones during visits to the Mormugao Port would bring immense joy and emotional well-being

to both seafarers and

their families.

GSAI highlighted that the seafarers are currently unable to bring their families on board the ship, and this initiative aims to improve the seafarers’ overall well-being and mental health by allowing them to maintain a better work-life balance and providing a chance to visit their families during docking periods. The organisation emphasised the importance of recognising the role of seafarers and addressing their needs, as shore leave plays a crucial role in allowing seafarers to rejuvenate and reconnect with their loved ones.

The GSAI also believes that this initiative will have a positive impact on the local economy in Mormugao Port, as visiting families will explore nearby attractions and contribute to the local economy through tourism activities. The association suggested that shipping agents should work closely with ship management and crew to ensure proper coordination and planning for family visits. This includes making necessary arrangements for security clearances, providing suitable accommodation and facilities for family members on board, and planning activities during the visit.
