Goan nun makes history as first Indian elected to lead Sisters of Maria Bambina

MARGAO: Sister Venita Fernandes from Balli-Fatorpa has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first Indian to be elected as the Superior General of the Sisters of Charity of the Saints Bartolomea Capitanio and Vincenza Gerosa, also called the Sisters of Maria Bambina (Holy child Mary). This accomplishment highlights her leadership and dedication to service.

Sister Venita, the eldest of five sisters, has always been known for her strength and determination. She completed her education at St. Xavier’s High School in Velim and Maria Bambina Convent High School in Cuncolim. After her higher secondary education at Damodar College in Margao, she entered religious life with the Sisters of Charity, shaping herself into the leader she is today.

Sister Venita's academic growth did not cease after entering religious life. She completed her Novitiate at Dharwar, pronounced her First Profession, and served at the congregation's convent in Secunderabad.

Throughout her life, Sister Venita has embodied humility, compassion, and selflessness. Her commitment to her mission has touched the lives of many, reflecting the essence of her calling. Her late father, Minguel Fernandes, continues to inspire her, and her mother, Ilda Borges from Balli, has provided constant support, nurturing her unwavering dedication to service. Sister Venita's journey includes roles such as Novice Directress, Superior, Provincial Councillor, and Assistant Superior General, providing her with valuable experience in the different regions where her congregation operates. Her election as the Superior General of the Sisters of Charity marks an important moment for the community. Sister Venita's leadership and service-oriented approach will guide her congregation, reflecting her commitment to faith and service.
