MARGAO: The Goan Seamen Association of India has demanded a thorough enquiry into an incident wherein a seaman Aurelio Cardozo (53) has gone missing from the vessel he was working, on Nov 29.

Pravin Gupte, vice-president of the company for which Aurelio was working in an e-mail to his son Glenson, admitted that the mess man and other staff had seen Aurelio at 6 am but that he was reported missing at 7.30 am.

Even though the vessel returned to the point it was at Muscat at 6 am searching for Aurelio in the sea, they did not find him and had asked other vessels also to look out for him.

However, in a mail sent to the NRI Affair Director, spokesman of the Goan Seamen Association of India Dixon Vaz said they suspect some foul play and has demanded a thorough enquiry into the matter by involving the Muscat authorities.

He disclosed that ever since joining the ship, this time around Aurelio was complaining how there were not sufficient provisions in the store and he being the chief cook was harassed by the staff for not providing them proper meals.

Vaz also pointed out that on November 29 was his son’s 21st birthday and there was no reason absolutely why he would commit suicide on such a significant day in his life and asserted that there was some foul play.
