MARGAO: Adv Narendra Sawaikar, Commissioner of NRI Affairs, reassured the seafarers community gathered at Margao to celebrate ‘Seafarers Day’ and pledged robust support to address their concerns and issues effectively.

The Goan Seamen Association of India (GSAI) issued an appeal urging all shipping companies to prioritise the protection of seafarers’ rights, particularly emphasising the need for thorough investigations into incidents such as deaths at sea.

Speaking at the event, Sawaikar encouraged the new generation to embrace the challenges inherent in the seafaring profession.

“Seafarers are making significant contributions to world trade and the global economy, even amidst the challenges they face at sea,” he acknowledged. Sawaikar reassured the gathering that the Goa government remains steadfast in its support for seafarers. Speaking as guest of honour, Quepem MLA Altone D’Costa pledged to advocate for the concerns of seafarers in the upcoming Assembly session.

“I salute the seafarers who are making significant contributions to the Goan economy, persevering through challenging conditions at sea,” he said.

D’Costa emphasised the paramount importance of seafarers’ safety while navigating the oceans. He called upon every seaman to prioritise and adhere to stringent safety measures, ensuring their well-being amidst the unpredictable maritime environment.

He further appealed those interested to join the cruise line not to engage in getting fake certificates.  Frank Viegas, President, GSAI stressed the safety of the seafarers and spoke about piracy and drone attacks, which are on rise.

“Safety at sea is a collective effort that demands vigilance, knowledge, and proactive measures. Safety of seafarers and well-being are vital not just to seamen and their families, but to the entire maritime community”, said Viegas.

On the occasion, several Goan seafarers as chefs and chief cook were felicitated in the hands of the guests present at the function.
