MARGAO: A group of people belonging to the Gondhali Caste submitted a memorandum to the Collector on Wednesday to declare their caste as a Scheduled Tribe in Goa. Claiming to have around 70,000 residents in Goa, they stated that they are spread in Vasco, Cancona and Margao and are backward.

The representative of the group, Sanjay Kadam stated that their people have been living in Goa for 70 years and have been left out of the scheduled list.  He stated that they have also submitted a presentation to the Chief Minister and Tribal Minister.

Curiously, the representation is made when the Lok Sabha elections are a few months away. Another representative stated that they want to get benefits in schools.

When the media questioned whether their children are denied benefits in schools, he clarified that they want the benefit of reservation.

When asked how will the government be able to identify genuine Gondhali caste and prevent fraud claims, they said that their community members have the voting card, Aadhar card and other documents.

Kadam stated that in some States like Maharastra and Chattisgarh, the Gondhali caste is declared as Scheduled tribes whereas in Karnataka the caste is listed under  Scheduled Caste.

He said that the community wants the benefits of political, social and other forms of reservations.
