PANJIM: The State government has issued a final ultimatum of October 31, to the tourist taxi operators to install the digital fare meters on their vehicles, failing which their licences would be suspended, followed by permanent cancellation. The Transport Department has so far cancelled the permits of 1,849 taxis.

In a public notice issued on Friday, Director Transport Rajan Satardekar said that the taxi operators will not be allowed to carry out business during the period of licence suspension.

Earlier this week, the government informed the Bombay High Court that it will complete the digital meter installation process by October 31 and permits of those taxis, which do not adhere to the directions, would be cancelled. The Court too, directed State not to revoke the cancelled licences, till the vehicles are fitted with the meters.

The department has said that all the permit holders, whose vehicle registration numbers are ending in 0 or 1 and whose permits were cancelled, are given final opportunity to install the digital meter on or before October 31 and approach the department for revocation of their cancelled orders.

“The cancellation order will remain valid till the permit holders approach the department with proof of installation and the permit holders are not allowed to carry out business till the cancellation orders are revoked,” the notice said.

Further, the permit holders with vehicle registration number ending in 2,3,4 and 5 are given time till October 5 to install the meters. Also, the other serial numbers from 6 to 9 are also directed to adhere to the time schedule given earlier.
