PANJIM: In what could come as major relief from skyrocketing prices of onion, the State Horticulture Corporation is set to make onions available at a subsidised rate between Rs 90 and Rs 100 per kg, across all its outlets from Monday.

Horticulture Corporation Chairman Pravin Zantye told Herald that the corporation has ordered 25 tonnes of onions from Nashik, which is expected to be delivered by wee hours of Monday. "Post that stock, we will be in position to sell onions between Rs 90 to Rs 100 per kg from Monday," he said.

Zantye said that at present the onions are sold at price of Rs 130 in the outlets.  The prices of onion in retail market were somewhere between Rs 150 to Rs 170 per kg.

Zantye said that Chief Minister has sanctioned Rs 15 crore, of the total pending Rs 34 crore, to the corporation.

Meanwhile, MGP MLA Ramkrishna Dhavalikar has raised strong objection to horticulture corporation's decision to sell onion at Rs 100 per kg, stating that in Belgaum the onions are available at Rs 70 per kg.

Dhavalikar said that government is fooling the people and using public money for their own interest.

He said that in Nasik, from where horticulture corporation has ordered onions, there the commodity is sold at less that Rs 50 per kg. "This is a scam and Chief Minister should intervene," former minister demanded.
