Says party leadership rejected the move as it does not want to break any party

PANJIM: Bharatiya Janata Party on Wednesday said that a group of 10 Congress MLAs had offered to merge the party in the BJP but the saffron party leadership rejected the move.

Reacting to queries at a press conference on speculation of Congress MLA Francis Silveira wanting to join BJP, Tendulkar said there is news everyday that Congress MLAs are joining BJP. “The Congress must stop blaming BJP and instead the party president must have some control over his MLAs, who want to join BJP,” he stated.

On charges made by GPCC president Girish Chodankar that the BJP is shopping for his MLAs, Tendulkar said the government was very stable with 23 MLAs.

“We have not contacted any MLAs, if Girish has any proof he should hold a press conference and disclose. Otherwise he should refrain from making baseless allegations,” Tendulkar said, and added that the trend throughout India is that opposition MLAs and MPs are waiting to join BJP as they know Congress will not come to power for next 25 years.

Tendulkar said ten Congress MLAs had expressed their willingness to join BJP in the last fortnight. “We strictly refused them entry as we have enough numbers on the floor of the House and we will complete this tenure along with our alliance partners,” he said. He added, “Our High Command refused the move saying we are not interested in breaking any party.”

Tendulkar’s statement comes days after Chodankar alleged that BJP was offering crores of rupees to their MLAs to join the party. Chodankar had said his party could not match offers given by BJP and it was becoming difficult to ensure that the flock remains together.

Tendulkar rubbished Chodankar’s allegations on Wednesday stating that his party is not offering any money to anyone. “Even in the past when two Congress MLAs Subhash Shirodkar and Dayanand Sopte joined BJP, there was not a single penny paid to them,” he said.
