Fisheries Department withdraws advertisement after public outcry; Minister directs probe in the matter

PANJIM: Following a public outcry Fisheries Department on Saturday withdrew the advertisement published on September 27 in local dailies for the post of driver in the department which stated that knowledge of Gujarati language was desirable along with Konkani and Marathi.

Fisheries Minister Vinod Palyekar, who is currently in the United States said that he got to know of the issue after people started calling him. “I am in USA. I started getting calls. I told the Director to withdraw it immediately,” the minister said.

“I have ordered Director - Fisheries to immediately withdraw this advertisement which mentions knowledge of Gujarati as desirable. This is totally unacceptable and those officers involved in this will be acted upon,” he assured.

Since morning on Saturday, the social media was abuzz with comments on the advertisement issued by the Fisheries Department.

This is not the first time such a mistake has been committed by the government. In 2016 Women and Child Department had issued an advertisement stating that Gujarati was a desirable language.

Efforts to contact the Director Fisheries proved futile but sources revealed it was an error. “It was basically a copy paste job from another advertisement,” sources revealed.

Sources in the Personnel Department in the Secretariat also denied there is any such requirement of Gujarati language in Fisheries Department. “Gujarati could be necessary in case of a particular subject in schools for teacher’s post but we are not aware of any such requirement for drivers,” the official said on condition of anonymity.
