PANJIM: Following the video footage of a sting operation being submitted in the High Court of Bombay at Goa, exposing the police hand in allowing matka activities, the court on Tuesday asked the State to address the issue and submit an affidavit on the constitution of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) by September 27.

Through an order on July 19 the HC had asked the state to constitute the SIT to probe the matka nexus in the State and find the source. Petitioner Kashinath Shetye submitted in the court that the SIT has remained only on paper and even two months later is not a reality. The HC will hear his prayer and the State on October 3, 2017.

An activist on Monday had submitted before the High Court a CD with a video recording exposing the police of accepting bribes to allow matka activities in the State.

Mukundraj Govind Mudras, supporting Shetye’s claim that Police are in connivance with matka dealers submitted to the HC video footage of a matka bookie admitting that they pay hafta to the police and operate the trade. Mudras submitted the evidence before the HC through an affidavit and said the video footage was recorded on September 4 and 7, 2017.

Shetye had approached the HC with a PIL alleging that police and politicians are in connivance with matka agents operating the trade in Goa illegally.

Following the court’s direction, Crime Branch in 2015 had registered an FIR against police, politicians and others. The case is currently being monitored by the High Court following allegations by the complainant that police are not tracing the source of matka.
