HC orders compliance check inspection at five fishing jetties across Goa

PANJIM: The High Court of Bombay at Goa on Wednesday directed government authorities to undertake compliance check inspection of five jetties across the State within the specified timeline. 

The Court also said that the directions issued in the Malim jetty matter regarding maintaining of hygiene, non-disposal of waste in the river, prevention of seepage or spillage of fish water sludge on roads, prevention of illegal construction etc will be applicable to all the other five jetties. 

A joint inspection report regarding the Malim jetty was placed before the Court, wherein various deficiencies were found and the government authorities assured the Court that they will take action in respect of these deficiencies.

Director of Fisheries has been appointed as nodal officer by the government in respect of all the complaints to initiate appropriate action in co-ordination with other departments. 

The Court was also told that action will be initiated against illegal weighing machines at Malim. 

The Court was hearing the contempt petition filed by Dr Silvano Sapeco regarding deterioration of hygiene and other remedies at Malim fisheries jetty and five other jetties across the State and non-compliance of the 2020 court order in a petition in this context.   

Adv Sidharth Samant, who represented the government departments later said that the  

Mandovi Fishermen Marketing Cooperative Society has been asked to ensure that the Malim jetty and the administrative complex are clean.  The Reis Magos village panchayat, has to ensure that proper disposal of garbage is done while, RTO has been directed to see that there is no traffic congestion. The Fisheries Department through its director is directed to issue tender and do the fencing work and to refurbish the jetty and to be ensured that nobody throws waste in the river. 

Earlier, Dr Sapeco brought to the notice of the Court that there were 47 illegal structures, shops and kiosks. To this the Court instructed the Mapusa Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) to check whether these structures are illegal.
