QUEPEM/CURCHOREM: Villagers of Gudemol-Sanvordem blocked mining transport on the National Highway at Gudemol on Tuesday morning for about 90 minutes till the Curchorem Police arrived and dispersed the locals.

The road blockade was staged following an accident on Monday morning wherein a teenager, Akshay Vadar, 18, lost his life on the spot in a hit-and-run mishap wherein a truck hit his scooter and the driver managed to flee.

Meanwhile, the police on Tuesday arrested the accused driver Sanjay Suresh Chavan (25), a resident of Pontemoll, Curchorem and native of Haveri -Karnataka.

PSI Karishma Prabhu is investigating the case under the supervision of PI Ravindra Dessai.

Akshay’s cousin Vinit Vadar, 14, riding the pillion, is being treated for his injuries.

“Due to the driver’s indiscipline and rash driving we lost a teenager’s life. It was a hit-and-run case because after the accident the driver managed to flee from the spot,” said Raju Naik, a villager.

“This is the reason today morning the villagers came on the road,” Naik said, and “blocked the road to seek justice to the Vadar family.”

“Only after the police came and assured the villagers that the culprit would be found and brought to justice, the villagers dispersed,” said Iyaz Vaz.

The villagers had said that till the truck driver was apprehended and brought before them, they would not perform the last rites.

Meanwhile, Sanvordem sarpanch Sandeep Pauskar urged the truck drivers to take maximum precautions while driving.

"We had asked the mining companies to deploy their security personnel to manage some accident-prone junctions but, they are not doing anything in this regard except assurances. Now, I will send warning letters asking them to deploy security personnel." said Pauskar.
