VASCO: In a shocking revelation, Dr Antonio Mascarenhas has claimed that he was kept in dark even after Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) started its annual dredging some five days ago.

Dr Mascarenhas is a senior expert member of Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA) and is part of the four-member Sub- Committee constituted under GCZMA.

Speaking exclusively to Herald, Mascarenhas informed that the NGT Pune bench had passed an order giving directions to the MPT to carry out annual maintenance dredging only under supervision of GCZMA sub-committee. However, despite being a member of the sub-committee, he said, he was unaware that MPT had already commenced dredging.

“It is quite shocking and surprising for me that I was informed about the dredging by MPT only on Monday evening. This is not a joke as it is a court matter and proper directions have been issued by NGT,” Mascarenhas said.

He said that it was surprising to him that the MPT had sent an intimation letter about the commencement of the maintenance dredging only on September 6 – a day before the commencement of dredging. “A copy of the letter was marked to me also, but I came to know about this intimation letter through some of my friends who sent me a copy on WhatsApp,” he said.

Mascarenhas contented that it was duty of MPT to give sufficient time to the sub-committee to get ready for monitoring the work. “Similarly it was duty of GCZMA to inform me about the issue in advance,” he pointed out.

Apparently, he said, the GCZMA member secretary started initiating action and fixed inspection of the site for Tuesday afternoon, only after receiving complaints from Khariwado locals about the dredging by MPT.

“Even this intimation about scheduled inspection was received by me on Monday evening,” he informed.

“Though there is no harm in giving last moment intimation, but this is not the way to behave when it is a court matter. I am very suspicious with the way this issue has been handled. MPT being a major organization should act responsibly. They should think of environment as well and not only the business prospects,” he opined.
