PANJIM: With formation of low-pressure area over Southeast and adjoining Eastcentral Arabian Sea and Lakshadweep area, Goa has been put on Orange Alert with heavy to very heavy rainfall likely till June 3. Thereafter, on June 4, State will be on Yellow Alert.

The low-pressure area is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm during next 48 hours.

Indian Meteorological Observatory (IMD) Goa observatory in a weather bulletin issued has warned fishermen against venturing into the sea during the period due to rough sea conditions and wind speed occurrence at 45-44kmph along the coast.  

IMD said a low-pressure area has formed over Southeast and adjoining Eastcentral Arabian sea and Lakshadweep. “It is very likely to concentrate into a depression over Eastcentral and adjoining Southeast Arabian sea during next 24 hours,” IMD said.

“Further, it is likely to intensify into cyclonic storm during the subsequent 24 hours. It is very likely to move northwards and reach near north Maharashtra and Gujarat coasts by June 3,” it added.

IMD said heavy to very rainfall is likely along Konkan and Goa coast from June 1 to June 3 and heavy rainfall on June 4.

Weather department has said that heavy rainfall may lead to water logging, flooding of low lying areas, uprooting of trees and hence has asked people to be alert.

Sea conditions are very likely to be rough to very rough during next 24 hours, and continue subsequently during next 24 hours.

IMD has also issued high wave alert in the range of 2.8-4.0 meters till June 2 along the coast of Goa from Vengurla to Vasco.
