IPL betting racket busted

PANJIM: The North Goa District Intelligence Unit has made a significant breakthrough by busting an IPL betting racket operating from Porvorim. Three individuals have been apprehended in connection with the illicit operation. The accused are Pravinkumar Thakkar, Joni Thakkar and Chetankumar Thakkar, all natives of Ahmedabad, Gujarat

During the raid conducted by law enforcement officials, a cache of 55 mobile phones, 10 laptops, and assorted paraphernalia amounting to approximately Rs 10 lakh were confiscated from the scene.

The accused were caught red-handed engaging in online betting activities using a laptop, specifically concerning the ongoing T-20 IPL cricket match between the Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Investigators have revealed that the suspects were duping the public by masquerading as a legitimate organization to solicit online bets. Their modus operandi involved exploiting phone-based betting applications to conduct their illegal activities.

The accused individuals will face charges under sections 3 and 4 of the GDDPG Act, Section 66-D of the IT Act, and section 420 of the IPC.

The authorities have assured that further investigation into the case is underway to unveil any additional accomplices and to dismantle the entire network facilitating such unlawful gambling practices.
