The minister was upset after the Chimbel resident levelled allegations against him

PANJIM: The IT Minster Rohan Khaunte has called for a detailed report of police cases against Chimbel resident Praveen Chopdekar, two days after he was attacked by unknown persons. Chopdekar, who has found support from local NGO Chimbel Gram Seva Kala Ani Sanskruti Manch, opposing the proposed IT Park in the village had made allegations against the minister.

As the video message of the resident went viral followed by the assault on him, Khaunte held a press conference to put forth the government’s stand. A visibly upset minister accused Chopedkar and a few others of having criminal records.

“I have asked (the police) for details of cases against him (Chopdekar). When I tried to find out who these people are, I realized most of them who are so-called social activists are belong to ‘X’ goondas. Ask the people of Chimbel where these people are found lying at Sangolda. He is supposed to be an extortionist. He is son of an ex-MLA and has police cases registered against him,” he said addressing a press conference at IT head office, Panjim on Thursday.

He refuted allegations that the site for IT Park and Start Up Village was close to the lake, clarifying that the proposed project is about 150-200 meters away.

Khaunte asserted that the IT Park will provide ample opportunities to the local population and slammed certain ‘sudden activists’ about their silence when huge acres of land at Kadamba plateau were given away for building private residential and commercial complexes.

“The project is environmental friendly and pollution-free. We are very clear that there is growth in the village, which has been tagged as a slum for many years. I want to change this perception and also provide jobs to people especially from the reserved category. Certain people have suddenly become social activists. They are actually doing self advertisement than activism,” he said referring to Chopdekar’s objection to the proposed IT Park. “In the guise of social activism, such people are blackmailing the government. I will not be blackmailed with cheap, low-stopping gimmicks,” he added.
