PANJIM: Almost 195 people lost their lives in road accidents in last nine months, which is almost 21 per cent higher compared to the same period last year. 

As per the statistics released by the State Traffic Police, from January till September 30, Goa witnessed 2,244 accidents of which 179 were fatal accidents in which 195 people lost their lives. 

In 2021, during corresponding period, State reported 1,969 accidents and 148 fatal accidents that killed 153 people. 

“As such, compared to last year, we have more number of accidents and related deaths,” said Dharmesh Angle Deputy Superintendent of Police, Traffic-South Goa. 

Addressing mediapersons, Angle said in view of the rising cases of Motor Vehicle accidents which have resulted in very high number of fatalities, the government has decided to prepare Road Safety Management Plan, with inputs from general public. 

An Open Forum will be organised on October 21 at Institute Menezes Braganza Hall, Panjim.

The forum will seek valuable suggestions from the public for consideration while preparing the management plan to minimise the road accidents. 

All the stakeholders like Goa Traffic Police, PWD, Transport Department and NGOs working towards road safety will participate in the forum.

“We request the general public to attend the forum and to put forth their grievances and suggestions regarding road safety. All their valuable suggestions will be taken into consideration,” he said. 

As per record, police have booked 3,87,629 violators and have collected Rs13,46,11,300 from fines.
