PANJIM: Following three earlier raids in the State, the Calangute police on Saturday conducted a fourth and arrested five persons allegedly involved in betting during the Indian Premier League (IPL) match between Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore.

This is the fourth IPL betting busted by the police within a month.

As per the information shared by the police, the five accused are Manoj Thadani (39 years), Bunty Dangi (32 years) and Chintu Dhoidhoy (28 years) – all from Indore, while Rupesh Singh (41 years) is from Mumbai and Jagdish Nepali (47 years) is from Nepal.  

Acting on specific information, the police team conducted the raid at a place in Tao Palace-Baga and apprehended the five accused and seized Rs 25,440 in cash, 15 mobile phones and 3 laptops worth Rs 2.5 lakh.

The accused were subsequently arrested and a criminal case was registered against them under the Goa Gambling Act.

Earlier this month, in two separate IPL betting cases, eight persons were arrested  - four from Rajasthan, three from Hyderabad and one from Nepal.

In yet another case, Calangute police booked a Karnataka native Sinnudden Beary, aged 25 years for selling electronic cigarettes and allied products worth Rs 15,000 in the Vape store, the Smoke Shop near Baga Circle.

The accused was subsequently released on bail.

The sale of electronic cigarettes is banned in the country.
