India requests Nigeria to maintain welfare, comfort of detained seafarers

MARGAO: The High Commission of India in Abuja, Nigeria, has intervened in the matter pertaining to detention of Indian crew onboard MT Heroic Idun and requested that the welfare and comfort of the seafarers be maintained. 

“The High Commission of India has now been informed that the vessel has been brought back to Nigeria and is presently anchored at Bonney Anchorage. The Indian crew members are presently being kept close to the area of Bonney Terminal,” said the letter of High Commission of India, Abuja. 

As informed by the Frank Viegas, President of Goan Seamen Association (Indian), the High Commission of India, has requested the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Federal Republic of Nigeria to grant immediate consular access to the Indian crew members and also requested that they be treated as per the laid down norms. 

Recently, Goan Seamen's Association of India (GSAI) and Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas had requested the Union Minister Shripad Naik, besides the NRI commission for his intervention to release and bring back those Indian seafarers, who are held captive at Equatorial Guinea. The vessel has a total crew of 26 persons including Indians.
