Karnataka continued to divert water despite matter pending in SC: PFG

PANJIM: The Progressive Front of Goa (PFG) on Friday alleged that Karnataka has continued to divert Mhadei River water despite the matter being pending before the Supreme Court.

Addressing the media persons, PFG leader Mahesh Mahambrey said that the team of the NGO led by environmentalist Rajendra Kerkar personally went to Kankumbi Village in Karnataka where diversion of Mhadei River is taking place. Mahambrey alleged that Karnataka was blatantly violating all the norms by diverting the water from Mhadei to Malaprabha basin by constructing underground tunnels.

“The matter is pending in Supreme Court but Karnataka has continued their work of diversion of Mhadei River water and State government is trying to act ignorant about the fact,” he charged.

Mahambrey said that Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant has failed to protect the interest of the State as far as river diversion is concerned.
