MARGAO: Photographs and video of an act absolutely shaming humanity came to light on social media after a Benaulim resident tied a man with a chain in his feet. Colva Police have registered an offence against the accused persons, arrested and released on bail.
The Colva Police on the complaint of Kashtu Manjhi aged 45 years from Simdega, Jharkhand, the victim in the video, registered an offence against Jose Aleixo Fernandes, aged 46 years and another person from Vaddi, Benaulim for putting a chain on the complainant's leg with a lock. The accused persons have been booked, arrested and released on bail for wrongfully confining the victim and abusing him with filthy language. The incident happened on the morning of Sunday.
It is told that the accused persons are fishermen. The victim was reportedly drunk and supposedly created a scene after being under the influence of alcohol which prompted the accused to tie him down. Locals claim that the victim is a labourer working with the accused person in this case.
The issue was first highlighted through a Facebook post of one Thomas da Costa who said that he had gone to drop his daughter to the airport and on his way back decided to stop at Trinity Beach, Benaulim, also known as Vaddi beach. He wrote, “This man was shackled to a pole with chains of the size used to tie elephants with two big padlocks. He has been shivering.”
The police were then called. Da Costa further wrote, “As per the police, the owner tied him as he was disturbing the neighbours amidst corona fear. Right now it seems he is given room and breakfast at the same place minus the chains.”
There was an outpouring of anger once these photos and the video was uploaded post which the police got into action.
