Large parts of Salcete inundated

MARGAO: The pre-monsoon showers across Salcete, on Thursday morning, which were coupled with gusty winds and lightning, caused a lot of water logging on roads. In some locations electric poles came down and trees too were uprooted.

-This should serve as a stark warning to the civic authorities as to what to expect when the monsoon season actually begins.

In the heart of Margao, the passage around Margao Municipality building was flooded due to the heavy showers, whereas in the villages such as Dramapur, Rawanfond, Chinchinim, Rachol etc, a number of tree fell, thus blocking of roads. There were also instances of tress falling on houses and the fire brigade rushed to these sites, including the old market Margao and other places across the taluka to clear road blocks.

People having shops in Margao also met the Chairperson and complained that water from non cleaned drains was overflowing onto the roads and entering into their shops.

The worst affected were the stall owners at the feast fair at Old market, whose stalls and merchandise were damaged. They have asked that the fair be extended given the high fees they had paid and the losses they suffered.

In the villages surrounding Margao, such as Chinchinim, Rachol etc, people mobilized their own resources to remove trees that had fallen on the roads and to clear blocked drainage. The first showers were also accompanied by long power cuts through the day.
