PANJIM: From the time the news of Ligia Noronha’s appointment as Assistant Secretary-General and Head of the New York Office of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) broke out, her immediate family at home have been flooded with phone calls and messages, congratulating them on the achievement.

“We are extremely excited and ecstatic. Not just her siblings, relatives etc but her friends across the world have been calling us and sending us messages. We are very, very happy for her (Ligia),” said a member of her family on behalf of all of them.

In fact, her extended family too have been receiving calls and congratulatory messages not just from Goa but from all over the globe.

Her family insisted that all praise and conversation should be about Ligia Noronha only as all this, her achievements, are all of her doing.

They point out that Noronha has always, from a young age, strived for excellence, been a high-achiever, dedicated her life to work, which she has pursued with commitment and passion. They also added that her professional life aside, she is a wonderful human being and is much loved and admired by one and all.

They also shed light about the Goan connection of the daughter of the soil who has put the State on the map with this latest appointment.

“While she was based in Fontainhas, Panjim during her early days, she grew up in Altinho Panjim.  She did her SSC at Our Lady of Rosary High School, Dona Paula. She then studied for a bit at Dhempes before she went to Sophia College for Women, in Bombay. She then completed her Post Graduation from Bombay University at the Post Graduate Centre in Goa. She then went on to do her second masters from the London School of Economics,” they added.
