PONDA: The people of Ponda are enraged after a spate of road accidents on the route from Baytakhol-Borim to Curti and held the road contractor responsible for the mishaps.
A youth had lost his life at Bethora last week after his bike hit an earth mover parked on the roadside. In the last six months, two persons have lost their lives in accidents on route.
This has annoyed the commuters, including the locals, have accused the contractor of negligence and demanded for necessary precautions.
While agreeing the need for the widening of the respective by-pass route, as the road is often used by heavy trucks, locals have highlighted that the road construction equipment is left on the roadside by the contractor, without any warning signs.
This heightens the security risk for the commuters, especially at night, when the visibility is poor.
On May 1, a youth had died after a car had turned turtle at Bondbag, Bethora while the widening work was underway. Since then many two-wheeler riders have suffered injuries on the road. On the night of October 22, a two-wheeler rider died on the spot after ramming his bike into earth mover.
The contractor has left raw materials such as sand and bricks on the roadside in an unprotected manner which poses risk to the motorists especially at night.
The trucks carrying the materials required for the widening work, are also seen parked on the roadside sometimes. Truck drivers eat and sleep in these trucks and offer the leftovers to the stray dogs, which again creates nuisance for the motorists.
