MARGAO: Concerned over incidents of crime in the village and about the safety of women, children and senior citizens, Loutolim residents have approached the Maina-Curtorim Police and have asked them to carry out an urgent tenant verification exercise.

This development came after a recent issue in the village where the locals were unhappy with the behaviour of some migrants with a school girl. There were also concerns raised about the security of senior citizens, especially those who live alone.

On Sunday, Deputy Sarpanch of Loutolim Village Panchayat Celina Braganca along with panch Antonieta Fernandes submitted a memorandum regarding this to the police officer in-charge of Maina-Curtorim Police Station.

Police Sub-Inspector (PSI) Prakash Bhagat informed the panchayat members that they have been doing routine checks but will carry out the tenant verification drive this week.

The PSI said that an awareness programme on this will be held on Tuesday evening. The PSI also added that care will be taken to track the homes of senior citizens as well as places where migrants are presently living.

In their memorandum, the panchayat members said along with the other villagers, they are requesting the police to have a tenant verification drive so that the local residents can have a safe and friendly environment in their village.

“We also seek to collect the data of the tenants who are already registered in our village, which are still existing and not migrated to other villages, those living without the document title in our village which ultimately gets highlighted at the time of crime or other incidents and thus defame the name of our village,” read their letter.

They also offered their full cooperation and support to conduct the drive successfully

“We also urge for a timely updation of our records in every six months to one year because there are labourers, coming in and out for various work purposes, especially for construction. So, for that, we need to approach the various contractors in our village and seek their data,” read the letter.

They added that such an exercise would be helpful for the police too.
