The desilting of the nallahs in the Margao Municipal Council wards may be delayed as the model code of conduct has come into force, even as the estimates of the works get prepared.
The good news is that the MMC was quick to get the work orders of the works of desilting of drains of all 25 wards of Margao. The work will soon begin in wards of first priority and then subsequently in all other wards. Rs 1 lakh per ward will be spent for the desilting the drains, the work order of which was issued on March 8.
However, as the Water Resource Department is still finalising the estimates of the work which is further going to be sent for administrative as well as technical approvals, the important work of desilting the nallahs will have to wait. There are 28 nallahs in MMC jurisdiction, big and small and the work will cost around Rs 12 to 15 lakh.
The officials at Water Resource Department Division III informed that they may need special permissions from competent authority if they feel the urgency. However, councillors have expressed that the work will be delayed.
Margao town ward Councillor Damu Naik said "The desilting of nallah is important for Margao as they take all the access rain water out of town. That needs to be done before even the first showers hit the state."
Councillor Tito Cardozo said "40 percent of the ward level pre-monsoon work is done and the latest ordered work will fulfill the remaining."
The Municipal Engineer Manoj Arsekar said that he will be surveying and sending the list of trees to be cut before the monsoons.
