PANJIM: The Education Department has directed that all school buses to mandatorily cover names of politicians displayed on it, in view of the ongoing Model Code of Conduct (MCC). The circular, issued by Education Director Nagaraj Honnekeri, which was based on the notice of the District Election Office, particularly implies to around 450-odd Balrath buses, attached with several government, aided and special schools.

“It is enjoined upon all the heads of the government/government aided/ secondary/ higher secondary schools and special schools in the State to cover the names of Chief Minister, Ministers and MPs etc which are displayed on Balrath Buses during the MCC,” the circular states.

The DEO had noticed that vehicles belonging to the aided institutions had continued displaying the names of the politicians despite the code in force. “It amounts to violation of the MCC issued by the Election Commission of India,” the education department observed reiterating to the institutions to ensure the code is not violated.

“There is every possibility that not pulling down images and/or names of politicians during the election period might influence voters to vote for a particular candidate or political party. Be it school buses or any government vehicle, no politician’s image or name should be visible till the code is lifted,” a senior bureaucrat told Herald.
