MARGAO: Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco on Friday expressed eagerness to know the status of State’s contempt petition filed in the Supreme Court with regards to diversion of Mhadei River water by Karnataka as on date.

In a written letter to Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant, Reginaldo covertly warned the State government that the Union Minister of Environment and Forests has a soft corner for Karnataka in the matter.

He stated, “The Union Minister for Environment, Forests and Climate Change Prakash Javadekar has the softest of the soft corner towards the State of Karnataka as he has been condoning its illegal endeavour of diverting water of Mhadei River.”

“You may not like it but it is true that Javadekar has been unfair and undemocratic towards Goa when it comes to protecting our State’s right on Mhadei. Last year in October 2019 the Union Minister had the audacity to tweet that the Central government had given Environmental Clearance (EC) for Karnataka on the Kalasa-Bhandura for drinking water project,” reminded Reginaldo in the letter.

“Looking at the unfriendly Central government’s vibe towards Goa on Mhadei, I once again appeal to your good self to safeguard the interest of Goa by ensuring that the waters of Mhadei River is not diverted but continuously flows towards Goa for our livelihood and for our posterity,” warned Reginaldo.
