MLA urges Govt to bring back Goan students from UK

MARGAO: Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco has requested the State and Central governments to pursue the return of several Goan students, especially female, pursuing higher studies in United Kingdom, who are stranded due to Pandemic coronavirus lockdown. 

Reginaldo has requested for their early evacuation through repatriation flights for Indian citizens. 

In his letter to Prime Minister, External Affairs Minister, Ayush Minister, Civil Aviation Minister, Chief Minister, Commissioner for NRI Affairs and the High Commissioner of India in London, UK, Reginaldo wrote “Many Goan students who are pursuing their higher studies in UK especially females along with their parents/guardians in Goa have approached me and requested me to appeal to our Indian authorities in India and in UK (Indian High Commission) for getting them back to Goa  through repatriation flights for Indian citizens. I have submitted a list with details of four stranded Goan nursing students of KLE Belgaum studying in UK,” Reginaldo stated.

"In this testing times of coronavirus pandemic necessitated lockdowns, the Goan student community in UK is stressed out as there is no one to take care of their needs and provide relief. All female students pursuing higher studies and staying in hostels and private accommodation of UK should be brought to their home in Goa due to security reasons,” Reginaldo mentioned.

He said that at this crucial hour, our Indian High Commission and Indian Consulate in UK also need to immediately reach out to our stranded Goan students to provide them immediate relief so as to repatriate them back home.

“I request the government to get back the students to Goa on war footing through ‘Vande Bharat Mission’,” he added.
