VASCO/MARGAO: Mormugao Municipal Councillor Pascoal D'Souza succumbed to the coronavirus infection at the COVID Hospital at Margao on Saturday.
It is learnt that Pascoal, who tested positive for the infection, was admitted to the MPT COVID Care Centre at Headland Sada and was later shifted to COVID Hospital at Margao.
He was reportedly kept on ventilator in the ICU for the past few days due to breathing issues pertaining to COVID and succumbed to the infection on Saturday.
He was the elder brother of former minister Jose Philip D’Souza.
The residents of Ward 17 from Mangor Hill, which is now containment zone, expressed shock over their councillor’s death due to COVID19.
The residents from Vasco from different walks of life expressed grief over the death of Pascoal.
Speaking on the condition of anonymity, a source from the municipality informed that the mortal remains of the councillor were brought from the COVID hospital to Vasco in a hearse van. The police later took the mortal remains to the St Andrew's cemetery wherein four people wearing PPE kits took the casket and with much precautions and following necessary measures laid the body to rest in the cemetery at around 5.30 pm.
The source further informed that only councillor's wife and daughter were allowed to pay their respect.
Meanwhile, the municipality building and Mangor Hill containment zone area was sanitised by the Vasco fire station officials.
Meanwhile, Opposition Leader Digambar Kamat has expressed deep pain at the passing away of Mormugao Councillor Pascoal D'Souza. Digambar said he was truly a leader of masses and always worked to help the needy.
Recollecting his encounters with Pascoal, Digambar said, "I have many fond memories of him. He was a perfect host when I visited their home in Vasco for meetings and family functions. He was always concerned about the well being of others and was a pillar of strength for the family".
