MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council on Thursday issued a notice to the South Goa Planning and Development Authority (SGPDA) regarding the collection of waste in a non-segregated manner and dumping of waste near Sulabh Shauchalaya.

The MMC warned if the SGPDA does not comply with the notice, within seven days, the municipality will stop picking the waste from the market.

In the notice, the MMC stated that the SGPDA was informed about the waste collection of retail market which is not in a segregated manner, i.e. wet and dry wastes are mixed together and the contractor is collecting waste in mix form and dumping it near Sulabh Shauchalaya.

Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes stated that it was requested to direct the agency/contractor to collect the waste in a segregated manner and to stack it into 240 litres dustbin with a lid so that the municipal trucks can transport the waste to municipal solid waste at Sonsoddo.

The CO said, “Till date no action is taken by the SGPDA to comply with the directions given by his office.”

The MMC has once again requested the SGPDA to direct its contractor to collect the waste in a segregated manner and to stack the waste in 240 litres dustbins with a lid so that stray cattle and dogs do not scatter the waste.

The notice has been issued under Solid Waste Management Rules 2016 and the MMC has requested to comply with the above directions within a period of seven days from the date of the notice failing which the council warned of stopping collecting the waste of SGPDA market and take appropriate action against the authority.
