VASCO: Amidst high voltage drama and hysterical scenes the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) on Wednesday unanimously resolved to shift ammonia tanks outside Vasco city, after taking legal opinion. It also resolved to ask Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) to stop transportation of ammonia until inquiry into ammonia tank mishap certifies that ammonia transportation is safe.
Both these crucial resolutions were adopted in the special council meeting that was resumed on Wednesday after it was adjourned by MMC Chairperson Deepak Naik on Tuesday following boycott by half of the councillors over the missing ammonia file.
Initially, the meeting resumed with the discussion on 5000 tonne capacity ammonia tank located inside MPT.
Councillor Kritesh Gaonkar sought details of when the council granted permission for setting up the tank and the name of the chairperson and other council members who supported the project and whether any council resolution was adopted before granting municipal permission for ammonia tanks.
To this, Chairperson Deepak Naik informed that in 2000, the council led by then chairperson M Pereira had granted construction licence for setting up ammonia tanks and occupancy certificate for the project was granted in the year 2002 by the council led by the then chairperson Carlos Almeida.
