PANJIM: Mines, Minerals and People (MM&P), a national alliance formed to combat the destructive impact of irresponsible mining in India, has petitioned South Goa BJP MP Narendra Sawaikar demanding to ensure commencement of sustainable and legal mining in Goa.

The delegation was led by Ravi Rabbpragada (chairman) from Andhra Pradesh and comprised Ashok Sirmali (secretary general) from Gujarat, Ravindra Velip (executive council member for Goa) and other EC members from Orissa, Jharkhand, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh.

MM&P has a nationwide network across 26 States and is an alliance of organisations, groups and individuals. “MM&P discussed with Sawaikar regarding commencement of sustainable and legal mining in Goa which can done by forming a people-oriented mining policy,” a statement issued on Friday said.

“The chairman Ravi Rabbpragada explained to him how illegal mining is taking place all across India,” it added.

Velip then discussed about the legal hurdles that may be faced if the Central government amends the MMDR Act 1957 and The Goa, Daman and Diu, Abolition of Mining Concessions and Declaration of Mining Leases Act, 1987.

“Velip then suggested the MP undertake a comprehensive study of all the regions affected by mining before deciding on the Goa Mining Policy,” the statement says.
