MPA Chairman Dr Vinodkumar outlines plans for new cruise terminal
VASCO: Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) Chairman Dr N Vinodkumar on Monday disclosed plans to privatise the Berth No. 9 so as to enhance efficiency and service quality.
Speaking on the occasion of MPA annual foundation day, Dr Vinodkumar outlined plans for the new cruise terminal and other aspects of the port functioning. He said that a dome will be constructed to mitigate coal pollution.
Highlighting sustainability, the MPA chairman emphasised tapping solar energy and all these initiatives would signify a strategic blend of modernisation and environmental consciousness in port operations. It was informed that the Mormugao Port was founded in 1885 and the first ship SS Westbound arrived in the port on April 15, 1885.
On the occasion, some best employees of MPA and some pensioners who had contributed in a big way to the port in their times were honoured at the hands of the MPA Chairman.
According to Dr Vinodkumar, the Mormugao Port achieved 19 per cent growth by handling 20.6 million ton on new cargo as against a total of 17.3 million ton handled last year. He said that 19 per cent growth was highest amongst the major ports in the country, which was possible due to the coordination with the South Western Railways (SWR), which brought iron ore into the port from neighbouring Karnataka.
Dr Vinodkumar hoped that the MPA would have an additional stream of revenue if the mining activity resumes in the State. The MPA is also looking to increase its revenue through cruise operations and leasing of its land to some private port.
