VASCO: A group of public spirited citizens of Vasco have suggested that the Mormugao Port Trust owes Rs 25 crore as property tax to the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC).

The public spirited citizens on Saturday handed over to the chief officer a representation regarding what they perceive as a consolidated property tax payable by lessees, tenants and concessionaires of MPT who have escaped assessment.

After handing over the representation, Savio Correia, an activist, said, “The consolidated property tax is one of the biggest revenues of any local body including Mormugao Municipality. The MPT has paid nearly Rs 85 lakh of property tax to the MMC for the last 5 years. Our point is that if this tenants, lessees and concessionaires who have companies here are brought under the text net and the amount is recovered. This will not only benefit the MMC making it independent for funds, but they will be able to give the citizens of Vasco relief from tax and non-tax reliefs in its future budgets.”

“We have relied on MPT’s own financial statements given to us through RTI and it shows that the MPT has escaped the assessment of MMC for the last 5 years; the amount is at least Rs 28.5 crore at the rate of Rs 5.5 crore per year in the form of Consolidated Property Tax  assessment,” Correia said.

One of the activists also mentioned that their idea is to point out to the MMC that they are not collecting taxes properly and what they are missing out. The Rs 20 crore outstanding from the flyover Bridge work was pointed out by this group earlier.

Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes said, “This representation is genuine and I have also found some Supreme Court judgment supporting it. Now, whatever difference MPT has to pay to MMC will have to be collected. The municipality will definitely recover the money and I will use all my powers to do so,” Fernandes said.
