VASCO: Water Resources Minister Subhash Shirodkar on Thursday inspected the Maimolem Lake and assured to undertake its beautification and development under the Amrit Sarovar scheme of the Government of India.

Vasco MLA Krishna `Daji’ Salkar, Mormugao Municipality chairperson Leo Rodrigues and engineers of WRD were present.

Shirodkar told media persons that the Government of India has launched the ‘Amrit Sarovar’ scheme wherein as many as 150 water bodies, 75 each in both the districts will be beautified and developed and water conservation among other things.

He further said that the State government has identified Maimolem Lake, which will be beautified and developed under the ‘Amrit Sarovar’ initiative within the next two years. “Within a fortnight the work of de-weeding will commence followed by desilting, before launching other amenities for the lake such as improving the quality of water of the lake using latest technologies and machines,” he informed.

Stating that there had been several plans for the development of Maimolem Lake in the past, the Minister said that he has already instructed the WRD engineer to prepare a detailed map of the lake and to identify the areas to stop dirty water and outward flow channel. He warned that stringent action will be initiated against those found discharging sewage in water bodies since it is a criminal offence.

Salkar said that WRD under Minister Shirodkar has been efficient in taking up a lot of projects benefitting people within a few months of the new government taking charge. He said, “If Maimolem lake is restored and developed it can provide Vascokars a place for recreational purposes.” 

He hoped that all stakeholders including farmers and Comunidade will support the government’s initiative.
