PANJIM: A 21-year-old welder was burnt to death at the construction site of the third Mandovi Bridge on Monday evening.

PANJIM: A 21-year-old welder was burnt to death at the construction site of the third Mandovi Bridge on Monday evening.

According to Panjim police, welding operator Sarul Sheikh, a native of West Bengal was working at the site when a spark escalated into fire.

“He was employed on contract basis with construction firm Larsen and Toubro (L&T). He was caught in flames and was over 90 percent burnt,” PI Siddhant Shirodkar said. Other workers at the site rushed him to GMC but he was declared dead, police said. The police have registered a case of ‘other accident’ pending recording of statements from the concerned officials of L&T and other workers.

“We are probing whether safety standards were adopted or not based on which a case will be registered,” Shirodkar said.

An autopsy will be performed on the body on Tuesday even as family members have been informed about the accident.

No officials from GSIDC, that has tendered the work to the company, were available for comments.

However, initial reports from the scene of action, where camerapersons of Herald’s TV arm HCN were present, show he fell into a hot deep trench containing tar, while he was trying to do some welding work. He was wearing safety gear and workers employed at the site managed to bring him out with the assistance of other workers.
