MAPUSA: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has given relaxation to Mapusa Urban Co-operative Bank of Goa Ltd to accept electricity and water bills.

The Bank’s General Manager, Shailendra Sawant, informed that the bank received a letter, dated September 12, from RBI granting permission to accept water and electricity bills.

“We have been told that henceforth we can collect water and electricity bills, but have to open a separate account in another bank and directly credit the amount to the account of the respective departments. We have instructed all the branches that from today on wards to accept water and electricity bills like we used to do earlier,” he said.

The earlier amounts have already been remitted to the respective departments and hence there is no question of any arrears with the bank.

While the resignation of the Board of Directors has been forwarded by the General Manager of the Bank to the competent authorities, till today they have not received any intimation on the same.

“According to me they are still Board of Directors till their resignation is accepted by the Central Registrar. Our AGM is scheduled for September 29 and that will be conducted by the Board of Directors and I have already spoken to them,” Sawant said.

Kiran Shirodkar, a shareholder, opined that accepting the water and electricity bill payments is going to be just a service rendered by the bank.
