LEACHATE ALL OVER THE PLACE
Sonsoddo’s leachate is now in puddles, ponds, drains, wells and even homes
The Sonsoddo garbage dump is once again covered with plastic tarpaulin and the over 300 dogs at the garbage dumb have ripped through the tarpaulin and left gaping holes, allowing rain water leachate to percolate through the garbage and into the ground water.
“The problem is the manner in which the tarpaulin is placed and the height of the garbage dumb and the fact that all tree trimmings and broken branches are placed on top of the dump after pre-monsoon work by the municipality. This prevents us from covering the dump fully and hence the plastic covering works as flows bringing more leachate outside the dump compared to otherwise wherein a large quantity of the leachate is absorbed within the garbage dump it,” said Hakim the municipal workers supervisor at Sonsoddo. He also said that all the trees that collapsed in the monsoons were dumped into the Sonsoddo making matters worse.
Meanwhile locals in Amrut Nagar, the residential colonies besides Sonsoddo show us a puddle along their homes where the leachate has collected in puddles and ponds in an open space and how the leachate now flows into their gardens during a heavy shower. While Sebilius Noronha shows us how the gutters of Sonsoddo are interlinked with a stream at Gogol and then connected to a nullah at Aggalli which makes the leachate flow right into Margao and the fields of Fatorda and Borda causing rashes, itching and death of their rice crops.
Surprisingly the Citizens of Sonsoddo started a movement a few years back and installed CCTV camera’s stating that they want to keep a tab on the people and establishments illegally dumping garbage at Sonsoddo at night. But with most members from that forum now in political parties, the members admit that the movement became more like a platform for political gains rather than fighting for the garbage dump and the problem of leachate.
Meanwhile the Chairperson Babita Prabhudessai admitted that Sonsoddo needs a quick solution and hoped that the newly formed Solid Waste Management Corporation will study all possibilities and focus on clearing the existing dump. While Solid Waste Management Corporation MD Sanjit Rodrigues believes that clearing a dump is busy but not adding to it and the resolve to segregate garbage is more important which he feels is on the onus of the people.
But while all the blame game continues, the Chief Officer of MMC admits that the leachate flow into the nearby villages and suburbs maybe less after the high court’s continuous orders to temporary cap the dump site during monsoons but he admitted that now in the middle of the monsoons there is no real solution.
