Maria to be Taleigao sarpanch, Sagar deputy

PANJIM: Maria Fernandes will be the new sarpanch of Taleigao Village Panchayat as the post is reserved for a woman this time while Sagar Bandekar will be deputy Sarpanch, informed Revenue Minister and Panjim MLA Babush Monserrate. 

The elections to elect the new sarpanch and the deputy sarpanch will be held at 10:30 am on Monday, May 6.  Sandesh Naik from Tiswadi Block Development Office (BDO) has been appointed as the presiding officer to conduct the elections. 

This is Maria’s second term as panchayat member. She was re-elected from ward VIII while Bandekar was declared elected unopposed from ward X. Both belong to the Taleigao Progressive Development Front backed by Revenue Minister Atanasio ‘Babush’ Monserrate and his wife Taleigao MLA Jennifer Monserrate, who panel swept the elections held on April 28, by winning in all 11 wards.

Four candidate were elected unopposed while straight fight was held in remaining seven wards. 

The 11 candidates who who won elections are Siddi Kerkar (Ward 1), Agnelo Da Cunha (Ward 2), Helena Pereira (Ward 3), Ratika Gawas (Ward 4), Ushant Kankonkar (Ward 5), Estella D’Souza (Ward 6), Janu Rosario (Ward 7), Maria Fernandes (Ward 8), Sanjana Diukar (Ward 9), Sagar Bandekar (Ward 10) and Sydney Barreto (Ward 11).  Out of them, Siddi Kerkar, Estella D’Souza, Sagar Bandekar and Sydney Barreto were elected unopposed.
