BICHOLIM: Prominent environmentalist and Secretary of Mhadei Bachao Andolan Rajendra Kerkar on Saturday stated that the Chief Minister’s assurance on the Floor of the House to take a delegation to the Prime Minister on Mhadei River water dispute will prove meaningless as the dispute is still in the Supreme Court.
Kerkar was speaking to Herald after Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant’s recent announcement in the Assembly that he would take a delegation to the Prime Minister if the need be and would not give up the issue of Mhadei at any cost.
“Even before an all party delegation was taken to the Central Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar but the issue is still in the Supreme Court and it is to be heard. Goa, Karnataka and Maharashtra have submitted special petitions in the Apex Court stating that they are not satisfied with the water share provided to them and have demanded to increase their share,” Kerkar mentioned.
He stated that it is very difficult to resolve this issue between three States as Karnataka has already completed the work of Kalsa-Bhandura Project and all the necessary measures are taken to divert the water.
He requested the State government to put forth their case in a strong way through State lawyers.
