MAPUSA: The message warning commuters of the dangers of commuting along the lonely road from Ganeshpuri Housing Board to Siolim especially at night has gone viral on social media.

The ground reality is that the road lacks streetlights immediately and plunges into darkness after sunset. But most people especially those from Siolim and from Pernem prefer this route as it is short cut to reach their respective destinations.

The message on social media is reportedly warning commuters against travelling along this road. The message is reported warns that a group of people sit near the garbage dumping area where they stop commuters especially riders and rob them after 8.30 pm.

When contacted, the Mapusa Police said that till date they have not received any complaints of commuters being robbed along the road. We too received the message warning the commuters against travelling along the road especially at night; we visited the spot but did not find anybody there. The police further informed that they will start night patrolling at the spot.

Since this area comes under Anjuna police jurisdiction, they too claimed having not received any complaint but added that they will start investigating the same once they receive any complaints.

The area falls in Assagao which is a garbage dumping zone and the MMC workers engaged at the Assagao treatment plant also reside in huts put up at the site.

The message on social media reads - “Please note dear friends. All those travelling through Mapusa-Housing Board-Siolim and back after or by 8.45-9 pm. There have been a series of robberies at knife point especially those on two wheelers near or where the garbage area is.” Police complaints have been made, but cops are casual about it... saying, "don't travel at night there".

When Herald spoke to WRD Minister Vinod Palyekar said, “I have already spoken to engineer Reddy and have directed him to install streetlights in the area within eight days. I will also direct the police to carry out night patrolling in the area till the streetlights are installed”.
