PONDA: Goa Mining People’s Front (GMPF) President Puti Gaonkar on Thursday said that the mining dependents feel cheated by the government and that they are in a state of panic.

Gaonkar was reacting to the Central government’s rejection of the pleas of the mining dependents for early resumption of mining.

As the next course of action, he said that the mining dependents would meet Speaker Pramod Sawant, South Goa MP Narendra Savoikar and BJP State President Vinay Tendulkar and seek clarification as to why the Central Government rejected to their demand for early resumption of mining.

“There is a little confusion over the news from Delhi that the miners’ demand has been rejected. But ours is a mining dependents forum and not miners. We will meet the leaders of BJP, Goa Forward Party and MGP for clarification on this,” Gaonkar said.

He said that GMPF had not demanded an Ordinance for restarting mining. “Its clear cut demanded was for amendment to the MMDR Act with prospective effect so as to continue the Goa mining till 2037,” he said.

He said that the State administration has collapsed due to the illness of chief minister.

Therefore, he said, the mining dependents have planned to gather in front of the house of Goa Forward leader and TCP Minister Vijay Sardesai on Monday; and on Tuesday, they would stage a sit-in at the residence of MGP leader and PWD Minister Sudin Dhavalikar, demanding withdrawal of their support to the BJP government.
