GSPCL had approached the Union Ministry seeking clearance for the proposed capacity enhancement of its existing manufacturing unit. The existing plant operates on coal based DRI technology

PANJIM: The Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) of the Union Ministry for Environment and Forest (MoEF) has directed Goa Sponge and Power Limited (GSPL) to have a public hearing and undertake a social impact assessment of its proposed enhancement of sponge iron manufacturing unit at Sanguem.

Goa Sponge and Power Limited  had approached the Union Ministry seeking clearance for the proposed capacity enhancement of its existing manufacturing unit. The existing plant operates on coal based DRI technology.

The Expert Appraisal Committee  has prescribed Terms of Reference (ToR) for undertaking an Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) study of the project. The public hearing for the project is to be conducted through Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB). The project proponent has been directed to undertake a social impact assessment of the project.

The project was initiated in 2016, wherein sponge iron manufacturing was capped at 90,000 tonnes per annum (TPA). As per the proposal, the targeted production capacity of sponge iron is 1,25,000 TPA, 425 TPD MS billets, captive power plant 12.5 MW and new direct charging hot rolling mill 425 TPD. The proposal is currently pending before the Expert Appraisal Committee of MoEF.

Ore for the plant would be imported from South Africa. In case of non-availability of iron ore, pellets will be procured from Karnataka. Raw material will be transported by road.

Goa Sponge and Power Limited  has a power generation capacity of 12 MW of which 10 MW is consumed in house for steel making and sponge iron unit and the balance power of 1-2 MW is exported to Goa Electricity Grid.
