‘Younger generation does not have access to drugs’

PORVORIM: Despite the fact that most members of Goa legislative assembly raised concern over the availability of easy drugs in schools and villages, government is on record that students and younger generation do not have access to drugs.

PORVORIM: Despite the fact that most members of Goa legislative assembly raised concern over the availability of easy drugs in schools and villages, government is on record that students and younger generation do not have access to drugs. 

In a written reply to Leader of Opposition Chandrakant Kavlekar, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, who also holds Home portfolio replied that police personnel maintained patrol near schools and colleges. In the past, police has also conducted surprise checks at kiosks and gadaas near educational institutions. The student and younger generation do not have access to drugs. A watch is kept on the activities in the vicinity of schools, he added.

No such instance of drug sale has come to light around the vicinity of schools and colleges, within the jurisdiction of police stations in the state during the last three years, he said.

Government further said there was no written or oral complaint to any police station in the state. It stated that police periodically met school officials during patrol to ascertain whether any drug peddling was taking place in the vicinity of schools. 

It may be recalled that in April 2016 Anti-Narcotic Cell of Goa Police arrested two engineering student of the Goa Engineering College, Farmagudi on charges of possessing drugs.

Police arrested Vishant Gawas and Arun Singh Rathod for possessing Ganja worth Rs 32,000.
