PORVORIM: The delimitation and reservation process for Panchayat and Municipality elections would be undertaken by the Goa State Election Commission (SEC), henceforth, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar announced on Monday.

He said that Government will undertake the necessary amendments to the required acts to hand over the responsibility of delimitation and reservation of Panchayat and Municipality wards to the SEC. “SEC will have to complete the work one year prior to the election,” Parrikar said.

During the discussion, both ruling as well as opposition demanded that the reservation and delimitation process be handed over to SEC for transparency.

“During the recently held Panchayat election there was much chaos over the reservation and delimitation issue. People went to High Court got stay, etc. Hence, to avoid such situations in future, SEC should be handed over the charge,” NCP MLA Churchill Alemao said.

He was rightly supported by BJP MLA Nilesh Cabral, who too demanded that in order to have a transparency in the election process, it is better that government does not interfere and election authorities take the charge.

Congress MLA Digambar Kamat suggested that along with panchayat, the reservation and delimitation for municipalities, also be handed over to SEC. “There were lot of errors in the delimitation process undertaken during the Margao Municipal Council election,” he said.
